BPI’s Mobile Banking

I made a rant recently against the failure of the Bank of the Philippines Islands (BPI) to open at least a branch in Metro Manila on Saturdays. It was surprising since in Cebu, at least a branch in SM City Cebu is open Saturdays. Prior to this, i’d been impressed by the “banking anywhere” policy of BPI which allows its depositors to transact business at any branch without additional cost (e.g. deposit, check encashment, etc.). Of course, this is realized by interconnecting the BPI branches through their servers.

Long before this, BPI is first in using the SMS feature of any cell phone through Mobile Banking. Way back year 2000, i can easily knew if my pay is already credited to my BPI ATM account without going through the long line at the ATM by just texting BPI Mobile SMS Banking. Just less than a year, BPI has also launched the BPI ExpressLink Mobile for the business sector.

Just recently, the BPI has introduced a mobile-based banking experience through the BPI Globe BanKO and its several partners. Any Globe or TM subscribers can open a BanKO account at any partners for only P100 (P50 of which goes to the depositor’s account as its initial deposit). There’s no maintaining balance for the account.

Using a cell phone, the depositor can send and receive money from anyone who is also a depositor of BanKO. A recipient may also have a GCash account to receive the money. The depositor will access his transaction through the BanKO Menu on his phone. Transaction fee is very minimal and much lower than the prevailing rates of money transfer agents.

Money can be withdrawn from several partners of BPI Globe BanKO listed below:

  • Tambunting
  • Prime Asia
  • Santolan
  • CVM
  • Jaro branches
  • Generika drugstores
  • Czarina Foreign Exchange
  • gasoline stations
  • internet cafes
  • loading stations
  • convenience stores
  • banking partners

Also, BanKO accounts let you pay bills and buy loads for your Globe and TM phones.  Check here for details. Here’s the video on the Press Launch of the BPI Globe BanKO.
